About this coloring page
A tall volcano rises behind a small long-necked dinosaur. Lava runs down the middle of the volcano from its rim, a few short lines mark its rocky sides, and round puffs of smoke float above it. The dinosaur stands at the bottom left with a round head, a dot eye, a thin neck, an oval body, and a curling tail.
This is a scene, not just one animal, so there is more to plan. The dinosaur's body overlaps the base of the volcano, which creates a few small spaces where the shapes cross. The smoke puffs and the lava stream are fun places to add bold colors.
Color ideas
- Color the lava stream bright orange and red, with a little yellow in the middle where it is hottest.
- Make the smoke puffs gray, with some lighter and some darker ones.
- Color the volcano a dark brown or charcoal so the lava glows against it.
Did you know?
- Most scientists think a huge asteroid hitting Earth about 66 million years ago caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, except for the ancestors of birds. Giant volcanic eruptions in what is now India were happening around the same time and may also have played a part.
- Layers of volcanic ash found in rock can help scientists work out how old nearby fossils are.
Try this
Make a simple baking soda and vinegar "volcano" in a cup with an adult, then color the lava on the page to match.
