Dragons Coloring Pages

This small set features three gentle dragons: a round, smiling dragon with stubby wings, a baby dragon hatching from a spotted egg, and a mama dragon with her little one. None of them breathe fire or look fierce, so they suit younger children who love the idea of dragons but not the scary parts. Each drawing is made of large, simple shapes that are easy for small hands to fill.

Dragons appear in stories from all over the world, and they don't always mean the same thing. In many European tales they guard treasure and battle knights, while in Chinese tradition they bring rain and good fortune. Coloring time is a nice moment to ask your child which kind of dragon theirs is.

Since dragons are imaginary, any color works. Green is the classic choice, but a purple dragon with a gold tummy is every bit as good.

Tips for coloring dragons

  • Give the tummy a lighter color than the rest of the body. Many picture-book dragons have a pale belly and a darker back.
  • These drawings don't show scales, so let your child add some: rows of small U shapes drawn in a darker marker look great over a lighter crayon.
  • For a shimmery look, color the wings in two shades of the same color, darker near the body and lighter toward the edges.
  • Try pairing colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel, like green with red or purple with yellow, to make the dragon stand out.
