Dinosaurs Coloring Pages

This dinosaur set includes some of the best-known prehistoric animals: a tall long-necked plant eater, a Stegosaurus with plates on its back, a Triceratops with its horns and frill, a roaring Tyrannosaurus, and an armored Ankylosaurus with a club on its tail. There is also a nest with a baby hatching out of its egg, and a small dinosaur grazing at the foot of a smoking volcano.

The drawings are friendly cartoon versions, not scientific reconstructions, with big rounded bodies and smiling faces that make them easy for young children to color. The Triceratops, the volcano scene, and the egg nest have a few more pieces for kids who want something more involved.

Dinosaurs are a great way into talking about fossils, deep time, and how scientists figure things out from bones. Nobody knows for sure what color most dinosaurs were, so kids can choose any colors they like and still be right.

Tips for coloring dinosaurs

  • Since dinosaur colors are mostly unknown, look at living reptiles and birds for ideas. Crocodile greens, lizard browns, and bright parrot colors are all reasonable choices.
  • Many animals are darker on the back and lighter on the belly. Try a dark green back with a pale yellow-green underside to make a dinosaur look more real.
  • Spikes, plates, horns, and frills are perfect for a contrasting color or a pattern. Alternating two colors along a row of plates looks striking.
  • Add a background to set the scene: ferns and palm-like plants, a blue sky, or brown and orange earth. This helps a simple drawing feel like a prehistoric landscape.
