About this coloring page
This Ankylosaurus stands low to the ground, with a domed back covered in armor. Three round plates sit across its shell, and short spikes stick up along the top and out from the sides. Its small head has a dot eye and a smile, it stands on sturdy legs, and its tail ends in a round club with spikes around it.
The spikes are single lines, so there is little fussy work, but the round plates and the club give a few smaller shapes to fill. In this drawing the club has spikes, though a real Ankylosaurus tail club was a big rounded lump of bone. That makes a nice point to talk about.
Color ideas
- Color the three round plates on the back a different color from the shell, like dark brown on olive green.
- Make the tail club a stony gray so it looks heavy and hard.
- Give the head and legs a lighter tan or khaki than the armored back.
Did you know?
- Ankylosaurus had bony plates set into its skin, like built-in armor.
- Its tail club was made of bone, and scientists think it could swing the club hard enough to defend itself against predators.
- Ankylosaurus lived at the end of the age of dinosaurs, around the same time as Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops.
