Butterflies Coloring Pages

Butterflies are a favorite first subject for learning about symmetry, because the left and right wings match. Most of the pages here show a butterfly from above with its wings spread, ready for mirrored patterns. Others show it resting on a flower, flying with a partner or tucked inside a jar.

The set also follows the whole life cycle. There is a caterpillar, a chrysalis hanging from a branch with a newly emerged butterfly beside it, and a night moth for comparison. Together they make an easy way to talk through egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and adult with a young child.

The simpler butterflies suit preschoolers, while the patterned wings, mandala and moth have more shapes for older children who enjoy planning a design before they start.

Tips for coloring butterflies

  • Color one wing, then copy the same colors onto the matching wing on the other side. Working in pairs keeps the pattern even.
  • Start with the spots and small shapes inside the wings, then fill the larger wing area around them. It is easier than coloring around a spot afterward.
  • Real butterfly bodies are usually dark. A black, brown or deep gray body makes bright wings stand out.
  • Try a warm-and-cool pairing, such as orange wings with blue spots or purple wings with yellow spots, for wings that really pop.
