Patterned Wings Coloring Page

MediumAges 5-8More shapes and a few small spaces.

Circles, teardrops and bands filling four big wings - a pattern lover's page.

Getting the page ready…

Pick a color, then tap inside any shape to fill it. Use the brush for the open areas and the eraser to take color back off.

About this coloring page

Four large wings fill this page, each decorated with its own shapes. The upper wings have a circle and a curved stripe, the lower wings have a teardrop shape and a small circle near the body, and the antennae end in round knobs.

With more inner shapes to plan around, this page rewards thinking before coloring. Children can choose one color for each kind of shape and repeat it on both sides to build a matching pattern.

Color ideas

  • Color the circles on the upper wings blue and the curved stripes beneath them orange.
  • Make the teardrop shapes on the lower wings yellow inside dark green wings.
  • Color the round knobs at the tips of the antennae the same color as the circles on the wings.

Did you know?

  • Butterfly wings are covered in tiny overlapping scales, a bit like tiles on a roof.
  • Some butterflies have round markings called eyespots, which may startle or confuse birds.
  • The shimmering blue of some butterflies comes from the shape of their wing scales bouncing light, not from blue coloring.

Try this

Before coloring, make a key: draw each shape from the wings in a column and choose one color for each. Then follow your key.
