About this coloring page
Here a cupcake has turned into a unicorn. The swirl of frosting has two closed, sleepy eyes with lashes, a round cheek at each side, a pair of pointed ears and a striped horn on top. The paper wrapper below is split into five vertical strips, and four sparkles surround the treat.
The frosting is one large bumpy shape, so it's easy to fill, while the wrapper's narrow strips give good practice at staying inside the lines. There are a few short strokes in the middle of the frosting near the eyes; younger kids can simply color right over them.
Color ideas
- Color the wrapper strips in two alternating colors, such as pink and white, the way real cupcake liners are often patterned.
- Pick one soft frosting color, like strawberry pink or blueberry purple, and leave a few white streaks so it looks shiny.
- Make the round cheeks rosy and the horn gold, with the spiral lines on the horn a shade darker.
Did you know?
- The gentle, sparkly unicorn is a fairly modern idea. Older European stories described unicorns as fierce, fast and almost impossible to catch.
- The qilin, a creature from Chinese legend, is sometimes called the "Chinese unicorn," although it is often shown with scales and sometimes with two horns.
