About this coloring page
A fairy with a round face and a smooth sweep of hair sits on a long oval leaf, her arms resting at her sides and her legs hanging down over the leaf's surface. Two pointed wings rise behind her shoulders, a sparkle floats on each side, and the leaf has a central vein running end to end with shorter veins branching off it.
The leaf veins and the fairy's legs are drawn as similar straight lines, so they can be tricky to tell apart. Before coloring, help your child find the two legs, perhaps by tracing them with a finger, and treat the rest of the lines as part of the leaf.
Color ideas
- Color the leaf in two greens, a lighter one above the central vein and a darker one below it.
- Give the fairy's legs a color that stands out against green, such as purple tights or red boots, so they're easy to spot.
- Make the two pointed wings a soft gold or peach, as if sunlight is shining through them.
Did you know?
- In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare describes Queen Mab, a fairy so tiny that her carriage is made from an empty hazelnut.
- Many older folk tales describe fairies as roughly human-sized. Tiny fairies small enough to sit on a leaf became popular later, helped along by poets and playwrights such as Shakespeare.
Try this
Imagine the leaf is a boat floating down a stream. Where is the fairy going? Draw some water and a small fish beneath the leaf, then tell the story of her trip.
