About this coloring page

An owl perches on a branch, looking straight ahead with two huge round eyes. Pointed feather tufts stick up from the top of its head, a small triangle beak sits between its eyes, and two wavy lines across its chest show its feathers. Its wings hug its sides, and its feet grip the branch.

The owl's body is a big, friendly oval, and the wavy chest lines split it into a few easy bands. The eyes are the star of the page, and kids can make them as bright as they like. Coloring the bands in slightly different browns gives the owl a soft, feathery look.

Color ideas

  • Color the rings around the eyes bright yellow or orange, like a great horned owl.
  • Shade each band between the wavy chest lines a different brown, light at the bottom and darker near the top.
  • Make the ear tufts the same dark brown as the wings so they look like part of the feathers.

Did you know?

  • Owls cannot move their eyes around in their sockets, so they turn their whole heads instead, much farther than people can.
  • The "ears" on top of some owls' heads are really tufts of feathers. Their actual ears are hidden on the sides of their heads.
  • Owl feathers have soft, fringed edges that help many owls fly almost silently.

Try this

Without moving your eyes, try to look over your shoulder by turning only your head, like an owl does. Then talk about how far real owls can turn.
