About this coloring page

A three-tier birthday cake stands on a table line, each layer a little smaller than the one beneath it. Scalloped icing drips over the edges of the bottom two tiers, and four short lines decorate the bottom tier like sprinkles or ribbon stripes. Three tall candles with pointed flames stand on top.

Counting the tiers and candles is a natural first step before coloring. The layers are wide rectangles that young children can fill easily, and the wavy icing edges give them a fun line to color along.

Color ideas

  • Color each tier a different cake flavor: chocolate brown, strawberry pink and vanilla cream.
  • Make the scalloped icing white or pale blue so it looks like it is dripping over the darker cake.
  • Give each of the three candles its own color and the flames yellow with orange tips.

Did you know?

  • Putting candles on a birthday cake is often traced back to children's birthday celebrations in Germany in the 1700s.
  • The tune of the song Happy Birthday to You comes from a song called Good Morning to All, written by two sisters, Mildred and Patty Hill, in the 1890s.

Try this

Draw extra candles on the top tier until there is one for each year of your child's age, then count them together.
